Why you should support and acknowledge the fans!
Fans work hard. They have to rotate fast and quick to provide an constant air-fluid stream, in order to help us by providing thermal comfort or cooling a vehicle engine. They are always standing guard, ready to spin hard and fast at the turn of a switch. Let’s take a moment to thank these hard workers for all they do, errrr, um, wait a second. I got confused, I think I am talking about the wrong type of fan. Today I meant to talk about the human fan, who is a person that exhibits a strong interest for something.
In this case, we’re talking about movie fans. In the world of indie filmmaking, fans are a precious thing. After all, we don’t make the movie just so we can watch it but hope others can vibe with it to. When a person becomes a fan, they may show their enthusiasm and support in a variety of ways, such as leaving a review, promoting the film or even writing a fan comment. It is great when we have people excited to see what we do next.
So in turn, we gotta acknowledge their support. If someone leaves a youtube comment or a review on letterboxd, responding to them with a comment goes a long way. Not only did this person take the time to view the project, but they also took the time to leave their thoughts. Knowing that somebody read their review or comment can really boost them up. Even a negative critical review deserves a response. (Keep in mind I’m not talking about someone being super mean or saying nothing of value, keep quiet on those comments).
Also, If you make it fun to be your fan, people will want to be your fans. Right? So make it fun and interactive. For example, I run my Free lunch promos where if you leave a review of the film, you get rewarded with some money that you can use on lunch. Thinking of creative ways to engage with your fans can go a long way.
The best part is when you can spark up a conversation with them. You never know, the fans may even present you with a cool idea or even inspire you creatively. Or you might even become online friends. Anything can happen, so you really have nothing to lose when you engage with your fanbase. As you can see, both types of fans help us to keep our cool and get us hyped up for our next project.
